Best Roof Bars 2026: Comparison and Buying Guide

Want to carry a bike, skis, a roof box or boards, but your car has no bars? Good news: fitting out a roof is one of the simplest and cheapest jobs there is, provided you choose bars that genuinely fit your vehicle. The real difficulty isn't the price, it's the fitting: the same model may fit one car perfectly and not at all on another.

This comparison reviews what really matters before you buy: the type of roof (raised rails, fixing points, gutters), the material, the permitted load, anti-theft locking and the length. You'll then find a selection of models available on Amazon, from the versatile entry-level option to lockable aluminium bars, plus an inflatable solution for cars with no mounting points at all.

How to choose: the criteria that matter

1

First, identify your roof type

This is the number-one criterion, even before the brand or the price. There are four cases: raised side rails (two bars running lengthways, with a gap under the bar where your hand fits), integrated or "flush" rails (sitting against the roof, with no gap), fixing points hidden under plastic covers, and the bare roof (no mounting points at all). A kit for raised rails will never fit a bare roof. Identify yours before any purchase, as it determines 90% of compatibility.

2

Vehicle compatibility: check the model and year

Even with the right type of fixing, the spacing of the points and the shape of the roof vary by manufacturer, model and sometimes year. So-called "universal" bars (like the Amazon Basics 132cm or the VEVOR raised-rail bars) cover a wide range of cars with rails, but don't remove the need to check. For fixing points, a vehicle-specific fitting is often required: note the make, model and year before ordering.

3

Material: steel or aluminium

Steel is heavier but often cheaper and very strong; aluminium is lighter, doesn't rust and stays rigid, which makes fitting easier and limits wind resistance. Most of today's versatile models are aluminium: that's the case with the VEVOR, the Chaos Racks 120cm, the HOMCOM 123.5cm and the universal bars rated to 150kg. For regular use and a roof you fit and remove yourself, aluminium is the comfortable choice.

4

Permitted load and distribution

Two figures matter: the maximum load of the bars themselves (for example 90.7kg for the lockable VEVOR, up to 150kg for some reinforced aluminium bars) and the maximum permitted load on YOUR car's roof, stated in the handbook. It's always the lower of the two that applies. Also remember to include the weight of the accessories (bike rack, box) in the calculation, not just the load.

5

Anti-theft locking

Some bars unscrew in seconds: in a car park, key locking is a real plus. Several models include it, such as the lockable VEVOR or the HOMCOM aluminium 123.5cm. The lock secures the bars on the roof and, depending on the model, the accessory fitted to them. If you leave the car loaded in town or at a resort, go for a lockable kit from the start rather than adding an anti-theft device afterwards.

6

Bar length

Choose a length that suits the width of your roof and what you're carrying. Too short, and the bars limit the accessories; too long, and they overhang and whistle in the wind. Common references run from 120cm (VEVOR, Chaos Racks), to 123.5cm (HOMCOM), 132cm (Amazon Basics) and 142cm (Amazon Basics pair). For a bike rack or a wide box, a longer bar gives more fixing room.

7

Rigid or inflatable: the case of the roof with no fixings

If your car has neither rails nor fixing points, classic rigid bars are out. The solution is then an inflatable system such as the HandiWorld HandiRack, which attaches via the door openings and inflates to create two soft, universal bars. It's less rigid than an aluminium bar and the load is more limited, but it's often the only clean option for a completely bare roof, and it packs away in the boot once deflated.

Comparison: roof bars

Here are a few models available on Amazon, sorted by use: the affordable all-rounders to get started, the lockable aluminium bars for regular use in town, and the inflatable solution for roofs with no mounting points at all. Always check compatibility with your vehicle and the maximum permitted load on your roof before ordering.

In summary

To choose your roof bars well, always start from the roof type, then check compatibility with your model, the permitted load and, depending on your use, anti-theft locking. A universal aluminium kit covers most needs; keep the inflatable option for roofs with no fixings. And if you break down or run into trouble on the road, MyBootlid provides 24/7 roadside assistance across France.

Frequently asked questions

Start by identifying your roof type: raised rails (with a gap under the bar), integrated "flush" rails (no gap), fixing points under covers, or a bare roof. Then note the make, model and year of your car. Universal bars for rails cover many vehicles, but for fixing points a specific kit is often required. If in doubt, check the compatibility list given by the manufacturer.

Aluminium is lighter, doesn't rust and is easy to handle: handy if you fit and remove the bars yourself. Steel is often a little cheaper and very robust, but heavier. For most family uses and a good weight-to-strength ratio, aluminium remains the more comfortable choice, and it's what you find on most current models.

Two limits apply: that of the bars (for example around 90kg for some VEVOR models, up to 150kg for reinforced bars) and that of your car's roof, stated in the vehicle handbook. It's always the lower of the two that counts. And don't forget to include the weight of the accessories fitted to the bars in your calculation.

Unlocked bars can be removed very quickly. If you often park in town, at a resort or leave the car loaded, choose a key-lockable model from the start, such as some VEVOR or HOMCOM references. The lock secures the bars and, depending on the model, the accessory fitted to them.

Yes. For a completely bare roof, with no rails or fixing points, rigid bars won't do. An inflatable system such as the HandiWorld HandiRack attaches via the door openings and inflates to create two universal bars. The load is more limited than with aluminium bars, but it lets you carry some luggage and packs away easily once deflated.
